The antique embroidery are the decorative art found in ancient times, which are of high value. This art of creative needlework, was handmade, was done with wool and silk earlier and occasionally with gold and silver thread. And later, it became popular with threadwork.

The art of embroidery is ages , centuries old one. Today it is very rare to find the thread work, which existed centuries ago. Because of its rarity, it is very expensive also. It can be found in museums and private collections only. May be some hundred of years ago, embroidery was taught in schools, in arts and science classes. Even today, we find that in some home science classes also, it is one of the subjects.

In history, we have read that the art of embroidery was introduced by Chinese.

Chinese embroiders favoured silk, which they had in the first place introduced into the west of which the production was pursued with zeal. Fine embroiders was used on robes, in many instances on both sides of the fabric with the thread-ends fully concealed. It was used also with great effect in the form of pictures. Similar work was done by Japanese.

At the heart of Chinese embroidery, as with other aspects of Chinese art, is the symbolism of the motifs depicted. The Chinese believe that the forces of evil are all around. So clothing and accessories were lavishly embroidered with auspicious emblems for long life, wealth and good fortune.

The very early examples of English embroidery were done on silk panels, of which most were white in color using silk thread to compose the design. Works were often designed around carved pieces, such as carved heads, faces, hands, and often shoes, which were then incorporated into the piece. The fine embroidery would fill in the clothing and background setting. These fine pieces of needle art would then be framed or perhaps inset into the top of a box.

Since the eighteenth century, the fashion of embroidery became an exercise for children. They were embroidered with the letters of alphabets, mottoes, texts, verses and the date of execution together with the name of the worker. Later in the century the making of maps became popular. These were drawn in outline silk and the whole, including county boundaries and names, then stitched carefully in appropriate colors.

In the nineteenth century, there was a fashion for working brilliantly colored pictures in wool, many were after famous paintings and on biblical subjects. They were known as Berlin woolwork, for both patterns and materials were prepared and exported from Prussia. Embroidery was done with thick wool and big stitches, and many were of large size and could have taken more time to finish.

The wonderful art of embroidery is still very popular today. It is a bread-earner of few families. There are many talented artisans that design and produce beautiful pieces. I am sure many of these artistic creations will become the well sought-after antiques of tomorrow. The art of embroidery is done beautifully using sewing machines, new technologies. The work done is so fabulous, we can't make out if it is handmade or machine made. Hope this work inspires to accomplish more popularity.
