How To Finish More Quilts In Less Time
Do you have limited time and seemingly unlimited responsibilities? If so, how can you make time for quilting? While it may be an enjoyable hobby, it is probably not high on your priority list. Good news! Fitting quilting into your schedule is easier than what you may have thought. Here are three tips:
1. Use a timer
This can be a digital kitchen timer (my favorite), the timer on your oven or a timer on your microwave. Set it for fifteen minutes. And then go. The goal for this is to work on your projects consistently.
You may think, hey what can I do in fifteen minutes? Actually, you can do a lot. You could pick out your next project's pattern and fabric from your stash. You could cut your fabric. You could strip-piece some fabric. You could pin. You could cut.
The point is that doing a little bit each day will take you farther than you can expect. It will also keep your momentum going for your project. Don't underestimate what you can accomplish and when it's done, it's done. Walk away from it and move on with your life.
2. Clear Your Work Space
Clear your work space of everything except your current project. If you are anything like me, it is easy to get sidetracked. You look at that gorgeous purple and you want to do something with it. Even if it is just a scrap and taking your focus off the quilt you want finished for a special occasion. Keeping your workspace to just one project will help you finish it.
If you have an idea for another quilt, great! Write it down and put it in an idea stash. You can use index cards or you can keep a quilting journal. Write it down. Put it away and get back to your work.
3. Set Quilting Goals
It's always helpful to get through something if you can see what's coming afterward. If you don't have quilting goals or deadlines then you don't have any pressure to get it done and it probably will not get done. Quilt guilds are great in this regard. They have challenges and awards for finishing certain levels of quilts. You could also join an on-line quilting challenge or guild. My quilting buddy and I have quilting challenges each month with the reward being an excuse to shop at the local quilt shop (we both do not need anymore fabric). Accountability works!
So, if you find yourself not producing as much as you'd like consider using a timer, cleaning up your work space and setting goals. Bit by bit, you'll finish those quilts and becoming a better quilter in the process!
