Improve Your Sewing Skills

Depending on what type of sewing you do and what types of items you make while sewing, there are an endless number of tips and tricks that can help you to become a better seamstress. Here are a few I've learned that I'd like to share.

Piping - preshrink your piping before sewing onto garments. This helps keep your final product in the shape it was designed to end up in. I have made the mistake of buying piping, sewing it to a garment, then after the first washing, watching the garment be virtually ruined because the piping shrunk.

Stitch Curves - line and turn pockets, pocket flaps, and other such garment details, instead of turning up along a stitched line or using a metal shaping template.

Take liberty with pattern suggestions - most patterns offer suggestions of where to add additional material. Use this as a starting point, but do not adhere to it 100%. Examine your garment and decide for youself where additions or allowances need to be made. Look at similar items to decide whether or not you need to add or omit material.

Try new notions - keep up with the various notions available for your sewing machine and use them. The more tools in your arsenal, the more capabilities you have. Practice with them often to perfect stitches, seams, hem, etc.

Don't Be Afraid To Trim Excess Material - many times, we neglect to trim the allowances enough and the result is an awkward-fitting, lumpy garment. You can trim as close as 1/8th of an inch away from a sewn seam and in corners or angles where bulk is not good, you'll need to take advantage of this.
