e2f77752ebc3d996c18de2c500004c96 91x71 Learn Your Knits: Knitting Glossary!

Knitting may sound like a complex activity, but it certainly gets easier as you become more experienced. One of the most common difficulties experienced by newcomers the art of knitting is getting familiar with some of the basic knitting terms.

If you're learning how to knit and you sometimes wonder what some knitting terms mean, the following list will help you.

Memorize this terms and you'll be well on your way to becoming a proficient and skilled knitter.

Ok, so without further due let's get started:

Knit - This is how one of the main stitches is called, in knitting.

Purl - That's the other main knitting stitch, of course!

Cast on - Refers to the act of setting the stitches on the needle.

Cast off - Refers to the act of finishing a knitted piece and taking it off the needles. Also referred to as "binding off".

Joining - Refers to the act of joining either two pieces of year or two pieces of knitting.

Gauge - It may sound complex, but it's really just the ratio of stitches per row and/or per inch when you're knitting. It may not sound like a big deal, but keeping the ratios in check is a good way of making sure you don't make mistakes.

See? That wasn't so complicated! The single most elusive knitting term in this list is the "gauge"... but don't worry, I'll soon write more articles covering this specific knitting term.

Hope this list was helpful! Knitting is a great hobby, and you will have lots of fun learning how to knit! Make sure to keep at it, and soon enough you'll realize you can knit with your eyes closed.
